Yeah thanks for the tip on Twitter. I am using Fuzzy Semiologic recent posts plugin. It allows you to go as far back in time as you like and to select by category. You can also exclude posts. I do not have many post yet, so it works fine for me! Once I get many posts I can select recommend category for the posts I want to display, or hack the exclude filed to work as include.
