There would certainly seem to be something to learn from what they decide to display. As for snipping the SEO, all I can think of is they don't like there competion: SEOers.

I enjoyed reading the variations of the good and the bad for the user, the SEO, and the site owner. Comparing and contrasting the various perspectivies was intriguing to read! Thanks for the post!

I suppose in theory sure - the reality might not pan out that way though I guess. Unless perhaps, Google forced everyone to have an account whereby they'd limit you to x number of free searches per day, after which they'd only show you paid ads, unless of course you had an account with them and then you'd get unlimited free searches...

Stranger things have happened

Wouldn't this make it extremely hard for new sites to rank well in a few years - after an account has been established and used for awhile?

I don't know that his would/could happen, but if a user picks 10 or 11 favorite sites surrounding the same keywords wouldn't that push everyone else to the second page? Seems like it's another way to keep the big boys big and the little boys off the field.

Could also be a round about way of Google eventually influencing net neutrality.

No so sure I follow you Colin. Maholo for me was (still is I guess) about creating pages that supposedly add value to a keyword and that by attaining good results in SERPs therefore help SERP users. I'm sure the adsense has nothing to do with anything..
