Is that trackback link a pigs ear or a silk purse?

pigsear1.gif

Did you ever look in your comments box and spot a trackback that had just your snippet and some anchor text of a site trying to rank for their target keywords? Of course you did! You probably didn’t approve it, but if you did then they got you and you are a sucker! Yet what is it with these annoying things? What is their point? Why don’t they just feck off and die a nasty somewhere?

Really really bad blackhat SEO

Matt Cutts just made me laugh out loud in a comment on his blog. (emphasis mine)

I’m definitely not saying that “people that do SEO are bad” (at all), or even that sites that embrace blackhat SEO are likely to cut corners in business. Just that sites that embrace really really bad blackhat SEO are perhaps a tiny fractional bit more likely to cut other corners than regular businesses. That opinion comes from seeing some examples over the years like the one that I mentioned in my post.

No, not *this* website silly, the websites of people who land on this page, you know, those people who sit on Google or !Y looking for ways of promoting their sites confused by the overwhelming amount of stuff out there all shouting, Read me! Read Me! Like some Alice in Wonderland Bottle of Drink Me.

Promote my your website online

Regular readers aside, there is a chance that you may have come from a search engine for a query related to promote my website online, or get on the first page of Google or SEO for small businesses or Improve my sites position in the search engines or … I’ll stop there, point made.

Pssst…wanna buy a link?

I’ve just installed Jim Kukrals ScratchBack widget.

You can rent a link spot on this blog for $1 per day , that’s around 4 cents per hour.

Update:I’ve changed the default to autobump which means that you will stay on the list until bumped off. Each new ‘tipper’ goes to the top of the list. This means that overtime, your link will gradually fall down the list. This might take a day or it might take a month. Give it a try, it might bring you traffic.

Paid posts are the devil incarnate according to search engines

All commercial content should contain nofollow outward links, all of it..

Read in isolation that’s some statement huh? Yet if you read the posts at Ted Murphy and Andy Beard regarding Google and paid reviews, then that would be a fair conclusion to arrive at. Seems that Matt Cutts has averred that paid reviews or posts that are commercially sponsored should all contain nofollowed links, even if they are to websites that are not owned or controlled by the sponsor.

No such thing as a free SERP

This isn’t really an SEO type post. It relates to the whole job seeking thing and my recent experience of it, feel free to read it if you like, you might fall asleep or you might even learn something. I’m not qualified to say which, you can be the judge of that!

pageranktree.gifVery soon, you’ll no longer have to confess to being a sinner in order to use Googles re-inclusion or reconsideration request ( I suspect it’ll be called the take me off the naughty list next week, being xmas and all that)

This is a good thing, a small thing, but a good thing nonetheless. Anything that allows you to challenge without putting you on the back foot from the off, can’t be bad, can it?

Whilst Google are probably of the view that it’s an easy thing to do and even almost a no brainer for them to implement, you do nonetheless find yourself wondering why they employed the whole nasty evil language approach from the outset.

New SEO/SEM Job required

I’m looking for a role in an SEM/SEO environment. I currently live in England but would consider relocation for the right kind of role. Areas for consideration are London Hertfordshire and California, yes you did read that right Sunny California. Anywhere north of Watford is too cold

I have worked in a solitary environment for some time now and have decided that it is something I no longer wish to do. I don’t therefore, wish to work on SEO projects that are primarily solitary or long distance telecommute in nature. I wish to work with real people in a team environment on things that are challenging and interesting. This is of primary importance.

Do keywords in url’s matter?

Jill talks about changing url’s in her post here.  In my opinion, if you have a good ranking URL then to change it for the sake of a position or 2 is a little silly and potentially destructive.

That said, it did get me thinking about the whole keywords in url thing around whether it is a good thing or a bad thing to use them.

I’m taking a note out of David Aireys book and have decided to take a break from this stuff.

Lately I find myself either rehashing what others have done, or getting all hatey with a company who couldn’t really care less about what I think anyways, and that’s just all a little crap and life’s too short for all that nonsense. I’m going to concentrate on some of the more positive things out there on the Internet and try and have a little fun with it all instead.
