An ever changing post for an ever changing world

This post will never stay the same, just like the internet it will constantly move and shift. It will display different kinds of links to different urls, similar to Google Zetgeist it’ll draw upon what people are looking for, it’ll try and help those who want people to write about those ideas and topics that are important to them.

What do you want to write about? $sql="select * from keywords where kid > 2 order by rand() Limit 0, 1″;
$result = mysql_query($sql); @ $num_results = mysql_num_rows($result);

$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
$kz=”creation”;
//$boldit=str_replace(“$k”, “$k“,$row[kw]);
//$k=strpos($row[kw]);
$lowerdasheds=str_replace(” “, “-”,$row[kw]);
$klower=str_replace(” “, “-”,$kz);
$klower=strtolower($klower);
$lowerdasheds=strtolower($lowerdasheds);
?>

Ha, huh? It might seem risible, it might seem very serious (I can’t predict which word appears it’s completley random, until my script breaks that is!) but for your eyes, today that word is a word or phrase that someone somewhere is paying top $ for in a PPC campaign.

You’d think that at some point eventually, those very people would simply build good content related to and get the traffic that way. After all, that’s all the engines want really, good content that people will read and come back to and talk about…Could it really be that simple, write it and they will come?

I’m kinda wondering too how people will react (if they do at all of course) will they say rob over at yack yack is talking about or will the ever shifting keyword or phrase go unnoticed and get them talking about it in more generalised ways…we shall see, its fun to test and prod!

Please do tell, what is this post about? Is it about or is it about something entirely different?

  1. Very clever trick, although I have to admit that I don’t see any practical use for it. To be clear, I’m sure there is one… I’m just not smart enough to see it. :D

    Take care,
    Steve

    Hi Steve, no trickery involved, just the use of a function named rand().

    There is a purpose though, someone somewheres dendrites will be stimulated as a result.

    A friend Pm’ed me last night, a phrase she read here in this post said:

    “..will they say rob over at yack yack is talking about Erectile dysfunction or will the ever shifting… ”

    So straight of the bat already its amused someone, an unexepected but welcome side effect!

    I wondered what was the matter with you, for a few minutes there! ;) hehe

    And now – Generator Head. And I opened the post in a new tab – Flag Case. And again – Foam Mattress Topper – !! Ice Machine – I *like* it.

    Wow, this is a lot of fun! Do you know, we bloggers could have a fantastic time with this. Sort of like Madlibs.

    Could you have it so you write a story, and then it fills in the blanks with various different terms?

    Cheers!

    Ha! Glad you enjoyed having a little play there Snoskred ;)

    Yes it is a little MadLib! Its funny to read what turns up sometimes.

    I like the story idea too,I do already have a script somewhere that I wrote a while back that generates little pieces of random content. I’ll see if I can have a play with it and extend it out a little.

    I got pool chemicals. Cool idea for a post. Nice use of the rand() function. I like the idea of an evolving, ever changing post. Nice idea.

    Very clever, you could always scrape a blended rss feed based on the rand keyword and render that inline, and have some database function save each generated page into an archive folder with an auto-generating sitemap as it’s index page…it could get very big very quickly if you’ve got lots of traffic and you’d want to watch out for nasties and moreover dupe content penalties…

    Oh, by the way, “Missouri western state college” on the homepage and “Epilepsy” in the post

    Ack, as tempting as that might seem, if I did then I think I might just end up with some mad lib spam penalty or something!

    Yes, I guess it’s a bit of a blackhat idea…

    …something to try on an independent domain you don’t care about, see how it went?

    Long term, it just doesn’t work D. You can get up to 1st page in Serps sure, but you are soon knocked out of them when people complain, usually competitors or customers looking for stuff they need. At least that was my experience some time back.

    Hmmm…went from vision therapy to German costumes! Nice little script, although aside from being link bait I don’t see a real practical use, although if you used pictures it would be a nice randomizer.

    So how much is the bunny with the camo paint?

  15. robwatts on said:

    @las vegas guy – Maybe you’d need some therapy after wearing a German costume or two ;) I think different people will see different things in it all really not just literally either, maybe there’s even an esoteric side to it all, accesible to a few zen masters, glasshopper :P

    @Andy – to you sir, (assuming you were alluding to that one with the stucky up ears and cute little buns ), that would be gratis sir.

    I’m always looking for new ideas. This could be a great idea to use on a blog or any other site. I’ll definately be testing it out soon.

    BTW, I got Car Alarm.
